Yeoman Park, 840 E. Market Street, Huntington, Indiana
16,000+ layout with 3 main zones: flow park, flat lands and flow bowl sections. The flow connects all zones with creative combo features, offering endless linear and non-linear lines. Each zone has art integration moments, but the street flow area has multiple levels of integration. Each idea is rooted in Huntington’s typography and how humans connect and have connected to the landscape.
Hunger worked with local Myaamia artist Katrina Mitten, who has connections to skateboarding, to develop visuals that connect the park design with the symbology of Myaamia spirituality. Katrina developed the idea of using the Thunderbird and the Water Panther and how they interact between the land and the water within the park elevations. Everywhere in the park you will see the extension of the Thunderbird, flying above and keeping watch. Katrina told us the stories and also gave us permission to use inspiration from her art, which we did in most cases. For example, the Water Panther tail directly references her pottery as well as the canoe on the bank of the Wabash. Thank you Katrina.
The 8′ deep end of the flow bowl will have a custom tile mosaic inspired by skateboarding’s connection to positive mental health for youth and the park users. A main advocate of the park, Christina Knecht, was inspired to push for the new park because of the deep connection skateboarding and skateparks have with the positive mental health of the park users. We’ve seen for years in our survey responses that these parks are not only skateparks but homes and metaphoric medicine for many of you, which makes these projects weighted with importance. The mosaic’s central feature is a 988 motif (Mental Health Hotline), a beating heart, and a nod to Katrina’s beaded medicine bags.
As a side note, the park was originally 22,000 sq ft, but we redesigned it to 16,000 sq ft after budgeting realities set in. This is a great size for the Huntington community and a huge move for the region. We want to thank Mayor Richard Strick and his team for being so respectful of the rider base in Huntington. We’ve come such a long way in the history of skateboarding in Indiana and we appreciate how democratic and conversational we can all be to get the best possible projects built. Thank You Huntington.
